M3S Sports has been consulting with city of Columbus officials over the past weeks to discuss updates regarding the coronavirus (COVID-19). In consideration of Ohio Governor Mike DeWine’s State Order banning mass gatherings of more than 100 and under the guidance of Columbus Mayor Andrew J Ginther, the OhioHealth Capital City Half & Quarter Marathon has been rescheduled to August 29, 2020.
“We thank Mayor Ginther for his leadership and guidance on all matters of public health and safety, especially in these times of uncertainty due to the spread of COVID-19,” Race Director David Babner said. “The health and safety of our participants, volunteers, partners and spectators and others involved is our top priority. To that end, we are confident that moving Cap City to August 29 is the safe and prudent decision.”
The 17th Annual OhioHealth Capital City Half & Quarter Marathon and Commit To Be Fit 5K will still feature all the elements that have long made the event the city’s annual celebration of the healthy active lifestyle, including the Byers Xtra Mile Finish Line Party and PNC Post-Race Concert at the John F. Wolfe Columbus Commons.
“Rescheduling Cap City to late August was not an easy decision, but we look forward to celebrating our participants and showcasing Columbus to the region on August 29 with our biggest and best event yet,” Babner said.
In addition to Mayor Ginther, M3S Sports followed the advice and guidance of OhioHealth; Dr. Benjamin Bring, the event’s Medical Director; City Council President Shannon Hardin; Dr. Mysheika W. Roberts, the Columbus Health Commissioner; the Franklin County Board of Commissioners; the Greater Columbus Sports Commission and others in making the decision to reschedule.
“We applaud M3S Sports for making the decision to move Cap City from April until August as part of our community’s effort to stop the spread of COVID-19,” Mayor Ginther said. “Cap City has long been a tremendous partner of the city. I have personally participated in Cap City several times in the past and I look forward to Cap City once again celebrating Columbus on August 29, 2020.”
The OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon has been held annually in Columbus and surrounding neighborhoods since 2004. An estimated 14,000 runners and walkers are expected to participate in 2020.
“We appreciate the support and understanding of participants, volunteers, partners and the entire community in making this decision,” Babner said. “We know thousands spend all year training for our event, and we are honored to celebrate each and every one for all of their hard work. We look forward to rewarding our runners and walkers with a fantastic celebration on August 29.”
