at 2014 Capital City Half Marathon

14,500 Runners, Walkers Expected For Spring Fitness Celebration

COLUMBUS, Ohio (November 15, 2013) — A record-field of 14,500 runners and walkers will celebrate the active and healthy lifestyle by taking to the streets of Columbus for the 11th Annual Capital City Half Marathon Presented KeyBank on May 3, 2014.

After the race, all participants will be celebrated with Yellow Tail Sparkling Wine,” Cap City's traditional finish-line toast for those who commit to and finish the Capital City Half Marathon, Patrón Quarter Marathon or Commit To Be Fit 5K. Michelob Ultra also buys each participant's first beer after the race.

The Half Marathon, Quarter Marathon and 5K will begin near the Scioto Mile at 8 a.m. and finish at Columbus Commons, home of the Byers Xtra Mile Finish Line Party and Michelob Ultra Post-Race Concert.

“The Capital City Half Marathon will continue its tradition of celebrating our runners and walkers again in 2014,” Race Director David Babner said. “In the past 10 years, Cap City has grown into Columbus' spring celebration of fitness and we look forward throwing the biggest 13.1-mile block party ever on May 3, 2014.”

The Capital City Half Marathon showcases the city's two signature Downtown parks by starting near the Scioto Mile and finishing at the Columbus Commons, where popular Columbus band SWAGG will rock from 9am to 1pm. SWAGG, which will headline the Michelob Ultra Post-Race Party for the fourth-straight year, made history when it became the first band to play on the Columbus Commons' Bicentennial Pavilion stage in 2012.

The Byers Xtra Mile Finish Line Party will feature a variety of free activities, food vendors, Capital Kids Field Days, Family Fun Zone, which includes inflatables and FREE rides on the park's popular Carousel. More than 35,000 family and friends of participants will join the celebration as well.

Runners and walkers (21 and over) who finish the Half Marathon, Quarter Marathon and 5K receive a complimentary flute of Yellow Tail Sparkling Wine and a Michelob Ultra at the Byers Xtra Mile Finish Line Party.

Runners from all 50 states and several nations are expected to participate in Cap City again in 2014.

The 2014 Capital City Half Marathon will feature four events: the Capital City Half Marathon Presented by KeyBank, Patrón Quarter Marathon, Commit To Be Fit 5K and the Capital Kids Field Days:

  • The 11th Annual Capital City Half Marathon, which takes runners and walkers along a 13.1-mile course through downtown Columbus, the Ohio State University campus, South Campus Gateway, the Short North Arts District and German Village before finishing at Columbus Commons.
  • The 4th Annual Patrón Quarter Marathon, which takes runners and walkers along the 6.55-mile course through downtown Columbus and the Short North Arts District.
  • The popular Commit To Be Fit 5K, which crosses over the Broad Street and Main Street Bridges.
  • The Capital Kids Field Days will be held in the Columbus Commons from 9-11 a.m. and feature group calisthenics, three-legged races, line dancing and other activities. Mascots from local sports teams and organizations will also participate. Those who donate $10 to the Capital Kids After School Program will participate will receive a T-Shirt and Medal. Otherwise admission is free.

“The Capital City Half Marathon's four races provide runners and walkers of all ages and capabilities the opportunity to Celebrate Like A Champion,” Babner said. “We are proud that each year, we hear from participants who are moving up from the 5K to the Quarter Marathon or from the Quarter to the Half. Our No. 1 goal is to give everybody the invitation to participate, whether it be in the Half, Quarter or 5K.”

The Capital City Half Marathon weekend will kick off with the Capital City Half Marathon OhioHealth Health & Fitness Expo Party, a one-of-a-kind pre-race expo experience that includes a VIP Lounge, the Panel of Champions and an appealing lineup of vendors that extends beyond the traditional shoe and apparel companies. The Health & Fitness Expo, which also serves at the race's Official Packet Pick Up location, will be held May 1-2 at Battelle Grand at the Greater Columbus Convention Center.

The American Cancer Society is the Official benefiting Charity of the Capital City Half Marathon. Official Charities include Action For Healthy Kids, Capital Kids, Charity Newsies, Leukemia & Lymphoma Society's Team In Training and Melissa's House.
