Blue Jackets Captain To Be Honorary Race Director of OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon

Nick Foligno

Columbus Blue Jackets captain Nick Foligno has been named Honorary Race Director of the National Championship Edition of the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon, race organizers announced today.

The 2016 OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon will be held Saturday, April 30. The event will host the 2016 Men's & Women's USA Half Marathon Championships and be broadcast live on WBNS 10TV.

Foligno, a member of the Blue Jackets since 2012 and an NHL All-Star, will make several appearances to support the 2016 OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon, including on the Start Line Stage to welcome runners and walkers to Columbus on April 30 and on the WBNS 10TV broadcast.

“We are thrilled that Nick will be our Honorary Race Director in 2016 and help us celebrate the thousands of runners and walkers who have committed to the healthy, active lifestyle,” said David Babner, race director for the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon. “Nick has been a tremendous ambassador for the Blue Jackets for several years and we look forward to having him be our Honorary Race Director this year.”

The OhioHealth Foundation is the benefiting charity of the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon and in 2016 proceeds will benefit fragile newborns in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at OhioHealth Riverside Methodist Hospital and hospice patients at Kobacker House, OhioHealth's inpatient hospice care facility.

Foligno has a special affinity for the charitable cause. In October 2013, his daughter Milana was born with a rare congenital heart disease called mitral valve arcade. The ailment required revolutionary open-heart surgery just a few weeks after she was born.

“As captain of the Blue Jackets, I appreciate the tremendous fan support our team receives every night at Nationwide Arena and I look forward to returning the favor and cheering on everybody who takes part in this great celebration,” Foligno said. “I am especially proud to be Honorary Director this year knowing the event benefits babies born in Neonatal Intensive Care, a cause very important to our family.”

Foligno is a spokesman for and supports charitable initiatives for Papa John's of Central Ohio, the Official Pizza of the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon. Papa John's offers a complimentary slice of pizza to all finishers of the OhioHealth Capital City Half Marathon, Patrón Quarter Marathon and 10TV Commit To Be Fit 5K.

Papa John's has several campaigns that benefit the OhioHealth Foundation, including donating $2 from sales of a promotional pizza sold on-line in the months before the race and donating five percent of gross sales at its 25 restaurants on Race Day.

Papa John's also donates $500 to the Janis Foligno Foundation each time Foligno scores a goal in addition to donating a portion of the proceeds of sales of the “Defender” pizza to the foundation as well.
