Black Girls Run

COLUMBUS, Ohio — Black Girls RUN!, a national running group with more than 62,000 members in 30 states, has named the Capital City Half Marathon Presented By KeyBank as one of an “Official Race Meet-Up” for 2014.

The group, founded in 2009 to tackle obesity in African-American communities and to provide encouragement and resources to both new and veteran runners, has running groups in more than 70 cities, including Columbus.

Black Glrls RUN! co-founders Toni Carey and Ashley Hicks will appear at the Cap City Health & Fitness Expo on Thursday, May 3 & Friday, May 4 and take part in the Champions VIP Reception on Thursday, May 3.

“The Cap City Half Marathon event has become one of our favorite races, and because of the local support we want to continue showing our nationwide support for this race”. comments Carey. “This spectacular race event gives our members from across the country the opportunity to meet and fellowship, and enjoy a weekend of running.”

“We are honored that Black Girls RUN! will return to the Capital City Half Marathon in a big way in 2014, and we thank Toni and Ashley for their continued support of Cap City,” race director David Babner said. “We have gotten to know the members of the Black Girls RUN! Columbus group very well over the past few years, and we look forward to working with our local group to welcome BGR! members from around the nation to Columbus in 2014.”

The Columbus running group of Black Girls RUN! was founded in April 2011 by Ohio State University English professor Koritha Mitchell. The group has more than 200 members and is currently led by co-ambassadors Benita Wright Smith and Lori Lindsey.

“The ladies of BGR! Columbus are excited to host our fellow running sisters at the Columbus Capital City Half Marathon in 2014.” says Benita Wright Smith, Columbus Co-Ambassador. “We will have members participating at all 3 levels: 5k, Quarter and half. Our group trainings will begin March 1st to get us ready as we continue to 'Preserve the Sexy' in Columbus.”

The 11th Annual Capital City Half Marathon will draw an estimated field of 14,500 runners and walkers in 2014.

The Capital City Half Marathon Presented By KeyBank was founded in 2014 and is produced by M3S Sports, a sports marketing firm based in Columbus, Ohio dedicated to celebrating a healthy active lifestyle. M3S Sports also produces the Emerald City Half and Quarter Marathon, the Arizona Distance Classic, the Ohio State Four-Miler and the Flying Feather Four Miler, plus a variety of other running and walking events in Central Ohio.
