Bicentennial Edition of Capital City Half Marathon
to Celebrate Record Field of 13,000 in 2012

Race Will Start At Scioto Mile, Finish at Columbus Commons

COLUMBUS, Ohio (April 12, 2012) — The Capital City Half Marathon Presented by KeyBank will celebrate a record 13,000 runners and walkers “Celebrating Like A Champion” when the annual spring tradition is held in downtown Columbus on May 5, 2012.

The Bicentennial Edition of the Capital City Half Marathon will showcase the city's two new signature parks by starting at the Scioto Mile and finishing at the Columbus Commons, which will host the Byers Xtra Mile Finish Line Party and a variety of free activities for participants and spectators.

“The Capital City Half Marathon has always been about the celebration, and in 2012 we are going to celebrate our participants and the Columbus Bicentennial,” race director David Babner said. “We are proud to start at the Scioto Mile, finish at Columbus Commons and showcase all of Columbus throughout the 13.1-mile course before finishing with a party fitting of Columbus' 200th Birthday.”

Andrea Cambern, a television personality at WBNS-TV (Channel 10) for more than 20 years and the driving force behind the station's Commit To Be Fit effort, will serve as honorary race director.

“Capital City Half Marathon is truly a world class event in a world class city. It is just a natural step to now feature our world class parks for all of the nation to see,” Columbus Mayor Michael B. Coleman said.

Runners from all 50 states and three nations will participate in this year's race.

Columbus Commons is a dynamic 9-acre, multi-purpose green space that opened this year in the heart of downtown Columbus. “Columbus Commons is the ideal finishing spot for the Capital City Half Marathon,” said Guy V. Worley, President/CEO of Capital South, the organization that operates Columbus Commons. “With room for the thousands of runners, family and fans, we envision the park will be alive with activity and energy.”

After the race, the Byers Xtra Mile Finish Line Party will lead the celebration with “Sparking Wine and Chocolate,” a signature element of the Capital City Half Marathon, along with drink, music and much more. Race participants will enjoy complimentary Yellow Tail Sparkling Wine and Maramor Chocolates. Michelob ULTRA will also provide a complimentary beer for each participant.

Popular local band SWAGG will headline the Michelob ULTRA Post-Race Concert and will be the first band to perform at Columbus Bicentennial Pavilion at the Columbus Commons.

The Byers Xtra Mile Finish Line Party will also feature a free Family Fun Day, including inflatables and free rides on the popular Carousel located on the south end of the Columbus Commons.

The anticipated 13,000 runners are walkers will celebrate Columbus' Bicentennial with their participation on May 5, 2012 in the Capital City Half Marathon, Patrón Quarter Marathon, Commit To Be Fit 5K and the Capital Kids Mascot Chase.

The Bicentennial Edition of the Capital City Half Marathon will include:

  • The 9th Annual Capital City Half Marathon, which takes runners and walkers along a 13.1-mile course through downtown Columbus, the Ohio State University campus, the Short North Arts District and German Village before finishing at Columbus Commons;
  • The 2nd Annual Patrón Quarter Marathon, which will take runners and walkers along the 6.55-mile course through downtown Columbus and the Short North Arts District;
  • The popular Commit To Be Fit 5K which will cross over both the Broad Street and Main Street Bridges.
  • The Capital Kids Mascot Chase, an annual fun run for children and mascots of all ages with all proceeds benefiting the Capital Kids Afterschool program.

“The Capital City Half Marathon's four races provide runners and walkers of all ages and capabilities the opportunity to Celebrate Like A Champion,” Babner said. “The Capital City Quarter Marathon proved to be very popular this past year and will again provide participants a challenging middle distance that is quickly becoming one of our most popular distances.”

Also returning in 2012 is the Capital City Half Marathon Health & Fitness Expo Party, a one-of-a-kind pre-race experience that includes a VIP Lounge, the Panel of Champions and an appealing lineup of vendors that extends beyond the traditional shoe and apparel companies. The Health & Fitness Expo will be held May 3-4 at Battelle Grand.

The Capital City Half Marathon, founded in 2004 and produced by M3S Sports, has grown into one of the largest half marathons in the Midwest. The race weekend, May 3–5, 2012, will generate an estimated $4.2 million in visitor spending. The American Cancer Society is the Official benefiting Charity of the Capital City Half Marathon.
